In his late-August speech at Jackson Hole, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell crushed any hope of policy easing in the foreseeable future. This reaffirmation of tight monetary policy immediately sent stocks lower as equity investors had been hoping for at least a pause on interest rate hikes. Investors may continue to be disappointed if corporate earnings begin to suffer from the effects of persistent inflation.
